Volunteer Spotlight

“Turning the Tables” – for many years (decades!) my husband Ned and I have enjoyed having Amigos sitting at our dining room table as we all got to know one another better.  Whether it was just a routine Sunday supper, or a Super Bowl get-together, or a Thanksgiving meal,  the conversations were interesting and often memories were made.  This year Ned and I had the experience in reverse when on a recent trip we were invited to afternoon tea in the home of a widow in Croatia.  Ten of us had this opportunity and through the efforts of a translator, we were able to ask questions (and be asked ones in return), while we enjoyed traditional Croatian sweet cake, candies, nuts, coffee and brandies.  We also spent time in the garden and played with our hostess’s darling puppy.  This was a highlight of our trip, and experiencing the gift of hospitality from the “other side” of the table confirms for us that what AMIS offers to international students is a warm and welcoming way to build bridges.  Nadeen Green
